The formal training program for dental technicians is available in vocational schools, technical colleges and even hospitals. Once an individual completes the program, he or she will be granted an associate’s degree or a certificate. There are even schools that offer a four-year course for dental technology. Dental technicians who pursue this kind of education are given a bachelor’s degree.
The work place of a dental tech is called a commercial laboratory. This is where the dentists send the models and impressions that they need for their patients. It is also possible that a dental technician will only work for a particular dentist while others opt to work for several orthodontic establishments. Since there are various specializations involved in this field, a dental tech may specialize in one area or be skilled with all the tasks. As discussed earlier, precision and exactitude are important in this profession. It is possible that a patient lives miles away from the laboratory where the prostheses are created. It would be a waste of the patient’s time if the appliance would have to be remodeled or sent back to the laboratory because it doesn’t fit him or her. This is the reason why dental technicians are expected to ship orthodontic items that are carefully created with determinacy and veracity.
